Pearl Harbor

A movie that has really stuck out to me and shown me signs of realism is Pearl Harbor. This movie is based on the actual bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japaneese durning World War II. In the movie, you see how horible that day was and how many people were killed. It shows every detail from arms flying to people screaming and crying. This movie really makes you feel like your there and makes you wish that there is something that you could have done about it.

The Battle with Mr. Covey

In the short story, The Battle with Mr. Covey, there are many signs of realism. Throughout the story, the author emphasises the blood to show the readers how scary slavery is. When the slave is walking through the woods, the author describes it by saying ""From the crown of my head to my feet, I was covered with blood. My hair was all clotted with dust and blood; my shirt was stiff with blood. My legs and feet were torn in sundry places with briers and thorns, and were also covered with blood." By describing this, the author is showing how harsh slavery can be and how upsetting it is. The author is hoping that when somebody reads this story, that they will feel so upset that they will do something about it. That is was realism is all about. Its about showing people the harsh reality, hoping that by seeing this, people will want to do something about it to make it better. Another part of realism is describing everything right down to the last detail. In the quote above, the author is really showing you how the slave looks right now so that you dont have to use your imagination to create an image, he has already done it for you.

Realism: The Story of an hour

This short story shows many signs of Realism. Realism is the idea that imagination is useless and that the only way for people to stop crime and things that are unholy is by facing the cold hard truth. They believed that this was the most effective way of showing people the real world. In the story, Louise is sitting at home when her sister and her husbands best friend comes to tell her that her husband has died. For most people, this would be a very tragic moment and most people couldnt live without their other half. That is how Louise responds to the news at first. But after she has finished crying to her sister, she goes to her room to be alone and to morn for the death of her husband. Then, she realises that she is now free, that she can live her life for herself and not for her husband. So she opens the door and goes downstairs with her sister. At that moment the door opens and there stands her husband. Louise dies right then from a heart attack. This is the harsh truth that when you get so excited over the death of a loved one, things dont always happen like you want them to. As they say at the end of the story, "It was a Joy that killed."

The Raven

The poem, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, shows many signs of Dark Romanticism. The raven represents evil and death. In the poem, he is talking about his wife, Lenore and how death has taken her from him. Then a raven appears at his window and is almost moking him. He says ""Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil!--". This shows that he believes that this bird is responsible for the death of his angle, Lenore. Another line that stuck out to me and showed Dark Romanticism is when he said"Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer." This shows Dark Romanticism because he is talking about everything seeming to grow dark and evil because of the raven's presence.

The Alone in the Wilderness Video

It starts off with a man who is about fifty years old. He decides to go out into the wilderness and live alone for a while. This alone shows a sign of Transcendentalism. He is off to live alone in nature where his mind can be tranquil with God. So he builds himself a home out of wood. This is another sign of Transcendentalism because he is being independent and doing all the work alone. Transcendentalists believed that relying on other people meant that you were weak and that you were not being the person that God meant for you to be. The man ended up living in the woods by himself for 35 years before he gave up his home and went back to live with other people.
